Play CHOICE, WONDER, DELIGHT

Play is an integral part of our students' school lives at KPIS. Whether it is in their classrooms, in the school yard, on the wooden deck or at Komazawa Olympic Park, KPIS students enjoy play that is unhurried, open-ended and freely chosen on a daily basis.

Rich play flourishes in a supportive habitat, and KPIS teachers create this environment where students can express their choice, wonder and delight by giving them time, both open and private spaces, and simple, adaptable materials. In addition, our teachers guide students' play to help them reach a higher level of development that they may not be able to attain by themselves.

A growing body of evidence from recent research supports our school's philosophy that play is the fundamental building block of healthy development, and therefore, absolutely essential during the early childhood years. As play promotes cognitive, emotional and physical strength, its benefits are truly vast, and that's why KPIS teachers believe in the infinite value of play.
